Where was Santa when I was a kid?

I don’t remember seeing much of Santa

when I was a kid growing up in Pasadena!

If there were parades

I don’t remember seeing any of them.

The concerts mostly had the

story of the Christ child‘s birth, nothing about Santa.

I didn’t go to malls  very much

and I don’t remember picture-taking at all.

I’d write my little letter to be sent to the North Pole with what I’d want

and sometimes I’d get a letter back.

I remember hearing the letters to Santa

being read on the radio and I’d listen intently.

Sitting on Santa’s knee to tell him

what I wanted wasn’t even dreamed of back then.

I believed he was at the North Pole with his elves

and reindeer would fly him to our rooftop.

I’d often hear him on the house with bells ringing

and his reindeer’s hooves making a racket.

Or was that Mom and Dad being foolish

out in the kitchen eating Santa’s snack?

Have I forgotten it all or was that really

the way it was when I was just a kid?
