Scri …..By The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

Christmas in the post-War United States

Scri...by the Grinch who stole Christmas!!

If you frequented Harry’s Pool Hall when I was a teenager

you probably know the fad that lasted a while

It was popular among the males of our community

when someone said something really funny or witty

You would see fingers going for the neck of the speaker

and then “Scri by the…Grinch who stole Christmas!”

That wasn’t exactly what anyone actually said

and inside this fifty year old head I can’t remember the words

I know it would be one of the older teenagers,

any of the guys who hung out together in the pool hall

And many a fellow wished he didn’t say the very profound

statement which got all those fingers poking at his neck

While he tried his best to protect himself from bruises

or worse when the digits found their mark “Ouch!”

There was a look of delight on the ones doing the scriing

and hoots of laughter as the buddy was feigning a frightened look

Many guys got their necks scried before the fad

became a passing fancy never to be resurrected again
