The song goes something like this! And everyone sings along, in Newfoundland anyway! Used to be that everyone was camped out in the gravel pits, but not anymore. Now there are large rectangle plots of land levelled off, and with rope around them! Like someone trying to make them look respectable! If it works, why change it?
This is just a long weekend wish for all you travelling on the highways during the next three days. I wish that you arrive at your destination safely, and then on Sunday or Monday you drive carefully and arrive back home safely. Not asking for much, am I?
Well, you and I are both aware that there will be drivers on the roads who think one, two or more drinks are okay. They think alcohol won’t impair their vision or judgement. And we all know that this is absolutely not true! There are too many accidents and deaths on these holiday weekends and enough is enough! Let’s make a choice not to drink and drive. If there is someone who is not a drinker, hand over the keys to him or her. Or definitely have a designated driver, if there is not a teetotaller amongst your group. The life you save could be your own! And if you don’t give a dam about your life, think about your family and friends and the people on the highway who don’t deserve to die because you decided to have a few and get behind the wheel.
Also, this weekend be on the lookout for moose. They seem to be everywhere these days. They are big animals and if you hit one going 80 or 100km or higher, you may not live to tell about it. Keep your speed down and stay alert. Leave the cell phone turned off. Don’t try to eat while you’re driving, especially if it’s dark or foggy or rainy. If you have the option of driving home the next day when the weather is better or when animals are easier to see, do so. Enjoy another night with family and friends.
Oh, yes, don’t forget to use your seatbelt! How many lives could be saved every year by people buckling up? Check your child’s carseat to make sure it is safely installed.
Other than that, folks, enjoy the long weekend. I intend to! Have some fun. If you have the chance to dance, dance!
