Caplin- A Newfoundland Tradition

Last night my husband Peter dipped up our first caplin of the year on Middle Cove Beach. It is a shame I cannot invite all of you to breakfast but we will soon enjoy our scoff of fried caplin. He dips them in flour and fries them in sunflower oil. He would love to fry the caplin in pork fat, as his mother always did. I will post the photos in order of time. I hope you like them.

One time Peter remembers each of us eating 25 caplin for lunch. Today we had 20 between us for breakfast. Yes, they were delicious. Sure brings back memories every summer. And memories of our three sons growing up in St. Shotts, where we checked often for seagulls hovering over the water as a sign that the caplin were rolling in.

Nowadays we enjoy solitary meals of caplin until we are sick of them. Peter corns some in pickle until the eyes turn white and then he dries them. As I grew up on the west coast of Newfoundland where I did not enjoy these small fish, this was all new to me and very exciting to me as a newly wed and mother when I moved to St. Shotts in 1978.

We both look forward to the caplin rolling in each year.

Note about my ebook on my last year’s adventure:

Check out my ebook about my camino adventure last summer. I walked 550km of Camino Frances alone. The book is called Strong Camino Woman and you can download 15% free or buy it for $4.99 at http://www.smashwords.com or on itunes or at Barnes & Noble. I am hoping for 5000 downloads. I want you let me know what you think about the book. I am currently writing about my recent camino in 2014…Camino Portugues.

Last year Peter brought caplin home to St. Shotts from Middle Cove Beach on June 22. One day earlier this year!

    Pauline.
    Two feedback questions for you.
What is the start and end point of Camino Frances…ie what country do you mostly travel through?
Where you served sardines in Portugal. We saw them a lot and I had them. They reminded me a little of Caplin, but I like Caplin better. Yours looks delicious. Peter is a good cook. I know that!

  2. Love caplin and now when I viewed your pics here my mouth is watering for a feed of them. Delicious little fish!
